- Riveting at last
Last
night I went down to Mom's and Bob's to have a look at all the
priming. Wow they look great cant wait for them to be
delivered next week. In the mean time I brought back the
rear spar elevator bearing, as it fit in my pocket. I have a
two seater sports car so that's all I could fit in !!
I did
manage to take the elevator skins, stiffeners and trim access
plate stiffener for priming at the same time.
There
isn't much aluminium left in the garage at the moment !
Anyway
on with the riveting, see the bearing is a lovely green, all
primed up using Strontium Chromate.
Now
the plans called for a AN470AD4-5; so that's exactly what I used
but the shop head was severely undersized. Funny I thought
so after I had done all 6 I decided perhaps I should do a bit of
reading.
30
minutes later: oh dear it seems everyone has this problem,
and also with the rear spar which means ordering larger rivets eak!
Other builders used the next size rivet up AN470AD4-6. I can
only thing that the 4-5 was the correct size before the bearing
brackets were pre-powder coated by Vans. I resolved myself
to reading other builders sites more often.
I then
struggled with my next decision, do I carry on and 'forget about
it' or drill all six out and put the larger rivets in. I
decided on the latter....but it took a while.

In the
end the assembly looks like this and I am pleased and releaved.
I then worked on the left elevator skeleton and
corresponding counterweight.
Tada a picture of the skeleton of the control
surfaces, rudder with right and left elevator.
